PLEASANTVILLE, NY – Host Pace University took advantage of three errors by The College of Saint Rose and a service ace of its own to snap a 21-21 fourth set tie and put the finishing touches on a 3-1 victory against the Golden Knights (12-11/3-7 NE-10) this evening. Saint Rose had a mild two-match win streak snapped in the process, while the Setters (15-7/7-3 NE-10) won for the sixth time in their last seven outings.
Pace won the opening two sets by respective scores of 25-11 and 25-19, before Saint Rose cut its deficit in half with a 25-21 third set triumph.
The Setters, which produced 13 service aces and yielded only one throughout the match, broke open an 8-7 game with a 15-2 run in the opener and then scored three of the last four points in the second set to take a 2-0 lead. However, the Golden Knights hung tough to rally from a 21-19 deficit in the third game. A pair of kills from junior middle hitter
Kelly Ryan and three miscues on the Pace side of the net proved to be the difference.
Ryan wound up with a team-high 10 kills on the evening, while sophomore outside hitter
Sarah Kahrs finished with seven kills, 10 digs and three blocks. Sophomore setter
Theresa Staulo handed out 27 assists and delivered four blocks and senior libero
Mary German came up with 20 digs to lead the Saint Rose effort.
Junior middle hitter Sianna Johnson and freshman outside hitter Susana Verdugo-Del Real recorded 12 kills each, while sophomore setter Shea Hansen delivered 35 assists and 12 digs to go with five aces for Pace.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose returns home Friday to host league rival American International. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm. Meanwhile, Pace has the weekend off before returning to the floor Tuesday for a 7:00 pm NE-10 match at Southern Connecticut State in New Haven.
