MANCHESTER, NH – Sophomore forward Gianna D'Errico found the back of the net with 1:42 on the clock that allowed The College of Saint Rose women's soccer team to keep its school record winning streak alive in a 1-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory at Southern New Hampshire University this afternoon. The second-ranked Golden Knights (15-0/12-0 NE-10) also collected their third straight shutout and are now unbeaten in 10 consecutive meetings (8-0-2) against the Penmen.
D'Errico converted a feed from junior All-American midfielder
Amanda Deck that provided the final difference in what was a one-sided affair throughout the contest. It marked the second game-winner of the year for D'Errico, who is now tied with Deck for the team's scoring lead with 12 points (4-4-12).
Just 11 seconds prior to D'Errico's strike, junior midfielder
Kaitlyn Berry served a corner into the penalty area. Deck managed to get a shot off, but it was blocked by the Southern New Hampshire defense.
Saint Rose controlled play by outshooting the Penmen by a 19-2 margin and generating a 17-0 edge in corner kicks for the match. The Golden Knights earned 12 corners throughout the final 45 minutes alone, but were unable to come up with a result. Meanwhile, Southern New Hampshire was limited to just one shot in each half, both of which were off target.
Sophomore keeper
Susan Cowan played all 90 minutes between the posts for Saint Rose. She was not forced to make a save while earning her third shutout of the season. Stef Young, a graduate student, kept the Penmen's hopes of an upset alive by stopping nine shots.
With three regular-season games remaining on their 2009 slate, the Golden Knights will look to extend their winning streak on Tuesday when they host Pace University in a 4:15 pm league match at the Albany Academies. Southern New Hampshire also returns to the pitch Tuesday when it travels to Bentley University for a 3:30 pm NE-10 encounter in Waltham, MA.
