ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose endured its fifth one-goal setback of the season with a 1-0 loss to visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival American International this afternoon. The Yellow Jackets (7-8-0/4-5-0 NE-10) scored in the opening five minutes and thwarted several opportunities by the Golden Knights (2-11-1/1-8-1 NE-10) to walk away from the UAlbany campus with their second consecutive victory following Saturday's 3-2 home triumph against Assumption.
Junior midfielder Emile Barnet delivered a cross from the right sideline that Saint Rose sophomore keeper
Patrik Ohlsson appeared to have gathered in. However, the ball slid away from Ohlsson as he hit the ground. American International sophomore forward Thomas Denomme subsequently pounced on the loose ball and made the break pay off with his team leading eighth marker of the year.
Despite the mishap, Ohlsson was his toes most of the afternoon. He came up with eight saves, including four in the first half, to keep Saint Rose within striking distance. His counterpart, sophomore Ryan Brooks-Newton turned aside four shots-on-target en route to his second shutout of the year.
The Golden Knights did manage to produce some chances with several deep probes into the offensive third. Junior forward
Justin Little slipped in alone with less than five remaining until intermission, but Brooks-Newton came up with the save.
In the second half, Saint Rose hit a post from point-blank range and then with American International flooding its own area, freshman back
Patrick McCormack created space during a Saint Rose fury in the waning seconds. However, Brooks-Newton got just enough of his shot from 12-yards out to prevent the contest from going into overtime.
Up next, both clubs have 1:00 pm conference matches Saturday. The Golden Knights will host #5 Southern New Hampshire at The Albany Academies. Meanwhile, American International is scheduled to travel to Colchester, VT for a date with Saint Michael's.
