ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team scored nine of the first 11 points in overtime and junior guard
Jermaine Clark buried a key 3-pointer with 32 seconds on the clock that allowed the Golden Knights to defeat Northeast-10 Conference rival Pace University 86-80 at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium today. The contest was sponsored by Johnson Illington Advisors and was part of the College's Student-Athletic Recognition Day and Alumni Appreciation Day.
Senior guard
Josh Pelletier led four players in double-figures for Saint Rose (9-11/7-8 NE-10) with a career-high 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor. He also finished with a career-best nine rebounds. Clark filled up the stat sheet with 16 points, seven boards and three assists in a workmanlike 41 minutes, while freshman guard
Shea Bromirski tossed in 10 points.
Additionally, senior forward
Evan Lane nearly recorded the Golden Knights' first “triple-double” since 1998 with 12 points, 13 caroms and a career-high eight blocks.
The Setters (7-13/5-10 NE-10), who have now dropped eight of their last nine games, took a brief 77-76 lead in the extra session after freshman guard Ryan Woods knocked down a leaning “three” from the top of the arc. On the other end, Pelletier drained a long ball of his own for the 14th and final lead change of the afternoon that put Saint Rose in front 79-77. Bromirski then added a pair of free throws and junior forward
Malcolm Williams finished in the paint to cap the 7-0 run.
Pace managed to get to within three, 83-80, following a layup by junior guard Laurence McGhee with just under two minutes remaining. However, freshman guard/forward
James Wilson fed Clark on the wing for the final dagger.
The Setters actually led for the better part of the second half and held a six point, 70-64 advantage with 4:10 in regulation. Saint Rose got to within one after a trey by Bromirski and a layup by Williams, but Pace again increased its margin to four, 74-70, thanks to a pair of free throws from junior guard Carlos Howard with 39 seconds on the clock.
On the other end, Lane converted a feed from Clark and was fouled on the play. After missing the ensuing free throw, Williams came up with a steal and fed Clark streaking to the hoop for a layup with 24 seconds left. The Setters held the ball for the final possession, but did not get a shot off before the buzzer.
Woods led all scorers with 24 points on the strength of a 4-of-6 effort from the arc. McGhee tossed in 18 points and grabbed six boards, while freshman guard Adrian Mills wound up with 10 points, five rebounds, five steals and four helpers.
Both clubs are scheduled to return to action Wednesday night. The Golden Knights head to Saint Michael's for a 7:30 pm league game in Colchester, VT, while Pace travels to Le Moyne for a 7:30 pm tip-off.
