NEW HAVEN, CT – On a day when not much was going from beyond the arc, The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team relied on its foul shooting to pull away from host Southern Connecticut State University 66-58 in a Northeast-10 Conference game at Moore Fieldhouse this afternoon.
The Golden Knights (8-11/6-8 NE-10), who normally hit at a 69.3 percent clip from the foul line on a regular basis, shot 80.0 percent from the stripe in the second half, connecting on 16-of-20 attempts to erase a one point, 28-27, deficit at the break. Saint Rose wound up making 75.0 percent (24-for-32) of its free throws in the contest, while the Owls (1-18/0-14 NE-10) converted only 13-of-21.
Junior forward
Malcolm Williams led all scorers with 16 points on the strength of a 10-for-14 effort from the line. Williams also added eight boards. Junior guard
Jermaine Clark contributed 13 points, while freshman guard
Shea Bromirski tossed in 10 points for the Golden Knights.
Southern, which remained winless at home (0-7) and dropped its eighth straight, received 11 points and seven caroms from junior center John Mazzarella in just 18 minutes of reserve action. Senior forward Preston Bell filled up the box score with eight points, 10 boards and four assists.
In a tightly contested affair that saw seven ties and four lead changes throughout the first 28 minutes, it was not until the latter stages of the game that Saint Rose seized control. Clinging to a one point, 42-41, edge with 9:44 to play, freshman guard
James Wilson ignited an 11-2 run with a layup. Following a score by senior guard #J.G. Braga#, Bromirski buried arguably the biggest shot of the outburst via a 3-pointer off a feed from senior forward
Evan Lane to boost the Saint Rose margin to 10 points, 53-43.
The Golden Knights proceeded to knock down 9-of-12 free throw attempts throughout the final 5:51 to put themselves in the driver's seat. Saint Rose actually led by as many as 12 points, 63-51, with under a minute remaining. Mazzarella converted in the paint twice and junior guard Derrick Corbett connected from long range at the buzzer to provide the final margin.
Saint Rose has a week off before returning home next Saturday to host NE-10 rival Pace University. Tip-off is set for 3:30 pm as part of Athletic Academic Recognition Day, which is being presented by Johnson Illington Advisors. Meanwhile, Southern Connecticut State heads to Pace for a 7:30 pm date Wednesday.
