ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's soccer team surrendered three goals within a six minute span midway through the first half that allowed visiting Merrimack to capture a 4-0 Northeast-10 Conference victory this afternoon. The match was played indoors at the Latham Dome, due to wet field conditions at the original site, the University at Albany. It marked the first official indoor game in Saint Rose soccer annals.
Senior forward Tiago Dalboni had a goal and an assist and sophomore midfielder Adam Leone collected a pair of helpers to lead the Warriors (7-1-2/4-1-1 NE-10) who ran their unbeaten stretch to six matches in the process.
Freshman keeper
Patrik Ohlsson recorded eight saves, including six in the first half, for the Golden Knights (1-7-1/0-5-1 NE-10); while Merrimack senior Rob Pedra turned aside all seven shots on goal by Saint Rose.
The Warriors controlled the tempo in the early going and made the most of their chances. Senior midfielder Matt Sanderson struck with what held up as the game-winner when he took advantage of a Saint Rose failed clear attempt in the box in the 17th minute. Junior back Kyle Lortie then headed home a bouncing ball near the six-yard box at the 20:44 mark that ignited the Merrimack three-goal outbreak.
Saint Rose responded with pressure at the onset of the second half and had several opportunities to reduce its deficit throughout the final 45 minutes. Freshman forward
Taras Panchishak drove a shot to the lower right corner in the 53rd minute that forced Pedra to be on his toes. In the 88th minute, junior back
Scott Couch rifled a shot to the same spot that Pedra just got a piece of after diving to his left.
Both teams return to conference action with 4:00 pm dates Wednesday. Saint Rose will travel to American International in Springfield, while Merrimack is scheduled to host Saint Michael's.
