WEST HAVEN, CT – The College of Saint Rose volleyball team suffered its first Northeast-10 Conference setback of 2008 this afternoon with a 3-1 loss at the University of New Haven. The Golden Knights (7-4/2-1 NE-10) split the first two sets with the Chargers 15-25 and 25-22 before falling 21-25 and 19-25 in sets three and four.
Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Baxter was the only Saint Rose player to reach double-figures in kills with 11. Sophomore middle hitter Kelly Ryan finished with nine kills and a pair of blocks, while freshman middle hitter Chelsea Tyler contributed seven kills.
Additionally, freshman setter Theresa Staulo dished out 31 assists and junior libero Mary German paced the defensive unit with 20 digs.
New Haven (8-3/3-0 NE-10), which remained unbeaten in league play with the victory, received 11 kills apiece from senior outside hitter Brittani Cotton, senior middle hitter Charisse Cotton and sophomore outside hitter Sara Malmlov. Furthermore, Brittani Cotton added 23 digs and Malmlov recorded 12 digs and seven assists.
The Chargers never trailed in the third set and broke open a 21-20 score by taking advantage of a bad set, an attack error and a kill by Malmlov to close out the 25-21 win. The fourth and decisive set saw the Golden Knights jump out to a 13-11 advantage that was capped off by a kill from Baxter. However, New Haven outscored Saint Rose 14-6 the rest of the way behind a .414 hitting percentage and nine kills by the Cotton twins.
The Golden Knights will have 11 days before their next match which is scheduled for October 1 when they travel to Assumption for a 7:00 pm league match. The Chargers are in the midst of a five-match homestand that continues on Tuesday when they host Stonehill College at 7:00 pm.
