ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's soccer team was handed a 3-0 setback versus visiting New York Institute of Technology in a non-conference match on the campus of UAlbany this afternoon. The Bears (2-0) remained perfect on the strength of two second half goals that put themselves in the driver's seat.
NYIT applied early pressure and wound up with a 9-4 edge in shots at the break and a 1-0 lead thanks to sophomore forward Maciek Serafin, who found the back of the net in the 26th minute.
The Golden Knights (0-2) came out strong and had a chance to knot the score in the 55th minute. Sophomore midfielder
Liam Barrett sent a ball over the Bears defense that found freshman forward
Taras Panchishak. Panchishak made a touch but was unable to connect as NYIT junior keeper Cosimo D'Agostino made a diving stop to preserve the shutout.
The Bears tacked on two more goals during the final 25 minutes, one off a quick restart on a corner kick by senior fullback Josue Cruz and the other on a strike from freshman fullback Rafael Xavier that was deflected off a Saint Rose defender in the 80th minute.
Freshman keeper
Patrik Ohlsson finished with seven saves for the Golden Knights, while D'Agostino stopped two shots for NYIT.
Saint Rose will travel to Holy Family University in Philadelphia, PA for a two-day tournament beginning Saturday. The Golden Knights will meet Wilmington (DE) at 2:30 pm before taking on the host Tigers at noon Sunday. The Bears will head to West Chester University on Friday in a 4:00 pm non-conference match.
