ALBANY – Bentley University generated 27 points off 21 turnovers by The College of Saint Rose en route to a convincing 78-51 Northeast-10 Conference victory at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium this evening. It marked the second-highest turnover total for the Golden Knights this year and was also the lowest scoring output of the 2008-09 campaign.
The Falcons (7-3/3-2 NE-10), who have taken seven straight meetings between the two clubs over the past five seasons, received a career-high 29 points from senior guard Lew Finnegan. Finnegan scored his 1,000th career point on one of his eight 3-pointers with 6:56 remaining in the first half. The latter also tied a school record.
Additionally, junior guard Jason Westrol tossed in 21 points to go with seven boards and three steals.
Freshman guard
Shea Bromirski paced Saint Rose (3-5/2-4 NE-10) with 19 points on the strength of a 5-for-9 effort from beyond the arc. Bromirski was perfect on his first four shots from downtown, all of which came prior to intermission. Sophomore guard
Ben Johnson recorded a season-high nine points in 16 minutes off the bench, while senior forward
Evan Lane chipped in with eight points and eight caroms.
Bromirski came out blazing from the opening tip, dropping three treys to account for nine of the squad's 11 points throughout the first six minutes. His third 3-pointer during that span gave Saint Rose an 11-9 edge at the 14:12 mark. Bentley sophomore forward Brian Tracey buried a pair of free throws and Westrol finished in the lane to answer the spurt. However, Golden Knights' junior forward
Malcolm Williams hit a jumper in the lane to knot the score again at 13-13.
It was at this juncture that the Falcons began to pull away. Westrol and Finnegan combined for 20 points over the next 10 minutes to ignite a 20-2 run that put Bentley in the driver's seat 33-15 with 6:32 left. Saint Rose never managed to get closer than 10 points the rest of the way for what turned out to be the worst loss in 15 previous outings against the Falcons.
Bentley helped its cause by shooting 47.1 percent (8-for-17) from long range throughout the final 20 minutes. Conversely, the Golden Knights went just 2-for-9 from deep in the second stanza and junior guard Jermaine Clark (Perth Amboy, NJ/Perth Amboy), the club's leading point producer (15.6 ppg), was held scoreless for the first time this season.
Saint Rose will hit the road for a non-conference affair at Bloomfield next Tuesday in a 7:00 pm tip-off. The Falcons are scheduled to host Concordia for a non-conference contest at 2:00 pm Sunday in Waltham, MA.
