BROOKVILLE, NY – Junior guard
Jermaine Clark poured in a career-high 28 points to propel The College of Saint Rose men's basketball team to a 68-49 victory over New York Institute of Technology at the C.W. Post Holiday Invitational this evening. The win allowed the Golden Knights (4-7) to snap a three-game skid while wrapping up their 2008-09 non-conference slate.
Clark buried 10-of-14 shots from the floor, including a 5-for-8 effort from beyond the arc en route to the second highest scoring total of the season by a Saint Rose player. Freshman guard
Shea Bromirski reached double-figures for the fourth time in five games with 11 points, while junior guard
Brian Ledbetter finished with 10 points, four boards and three assists in 17 minutes off the bench.
The Bears (6-5), who were held 29 points below their 77.0 ppg season scoring average, received eight points and nine rebounds from junior forward Benny Flores. Senior guard Bryant Lassiter, the squad's leading point producer (20.5 ppg), was limited to just five points on 1-for-11 shooting from the field.
The Golden Knights led for the majority of the first half and were clinging to a seven point, 22-15, edge following a layup by junior forward
Malcolm Williams with 3:29 on the clock. However, NYIT sophomore guard Carl Kindburg sparked a 7-0 spurt that was capped off by a Lassiter 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the Bears into the locker room on top 24-22.
The aforementioned run bridged the two halves and resulted in a 15-0 outburst after NYIT sophomore guard Daniel Berg knocked down back-to-back treys to open the second stanza, thus giving the Bears a 30-22 advantage with 18:49 left in the contest.
Though Saint Rose could not find an answer for a 15-0 run by C.W. Post in last night's 13-point defeat, Clark and Bromirski helped lead the Golden Knights back to winning ways by combining for 27 points throughout the final 18 minutes of play. Saint Rose outscored NYIT 46-19, limited the Bears to just five field goals and forced 10 turnovers during that span.
Initially, Clark scored five straight points and Bromirski added a 3-pointer to pull the Golden Knights even, 30-30, with 17:08 remaining. After three consecutive free throws by Flores, Bromirski converted a feed from senior guard
Josh Pelletier and then set up another Clark “three” to put Saint Rose in front for good, 35-33, at the 14:57 mark.
The Golden Knights will return to Northeast-10 Conference play this Saturday when they host American International College. Tip-off is set for 3:30 pm at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. NYIT also returns to action Saturday when Nyack College visits Recreation Hall for a 3:30 pm non-conference affair.
