ALBANY – Freshman guard
Shea Bromirski knocked down a 25-foot, 3-pointer from the top of key with 2:03 left that put the Golden Knights up for good in a 64-63 non-conference victory against visiting Concordia tonight at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
Bromirski followed with a pair of free throws 50 seconds later, before Concordia sophomore forward Sean Walker finished inside to keep it a one point game with 1:02 left. Saint Rose then turned the ball over on a shot clock violation to afford the Clippers one more breath. However, Walker's 3-pointer from the left corner rattled off the back rim and ricocheted to the far corner as the final buzzer went off.
Bromirski led all scorers with 23 points, thanks in part to an 8-for-8 effort from the foul line, and had two assists and a pair of steals as well. Senior forward
Evan Lane was the lone other Saint Rose (2-2) player in double-figures with 10 points. He also pulled down a team-high six rebounds.
Sophomore guard Samuel Batista led the Clippers (0-3) with 16 points. Junior guard Troy Young added 13 points, while sophomore center William Eason recorded a “double-double” with 10 points and 10 rebounds to go with five assists.
Both teams hurt themselves by shooting a collective 20.0 percent (5-for-25) from the arc and coughing the ball up 22 times apiece. However, the Golden Knights capitalized more efficiently by producing 30 points off of Concordia's miscues. The Clippers conversely produced 17 points off the Golden Knights' mistakes.
After Saint Rose chipped away at an eight point, 28-20, deficit with 5:46 remaining in the first half to go in the locker room trailing by just one, freshman forward
Brian Hanuschak tipped-in his own miss and senior guard
Josh Pelletier finished a fast break to put the Golden Knights up five, 50-45, with 13:32 to go in the ballgame.
Concordia responded with a 13-2 jaunt to go ahead 58-52 five minutes later. However, freshman forward
Sheldon Griffin converted a layup and knocked down a pair of free throws to spark a 7-2 run that brought the Golden Knights back to within a bucket, 61-59, with 3:03 left. The Clippers then committed perhaps their most costly turnover of the evening, as Bromirski hit nothing but net on the ensuing trip up the floor to allow Saint Rose to improve to 21-0 all-time against Concordia.
The Golden Knights return to league action Sunday for a 3:30 pm game at Pace University. Meanwhile, Concordia is off until Wednesday, December 3 when the Clippers will visit NYIT at 7:15 pm.
