ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose split a pair of home matches with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-17, 26-24) sweep of Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State and a 3-2 (26-24, 18-25, 32-30, 22-25, 7-15) non-league setback to Adelphi this afternoon. The latter marked the fifth, five-set loss of the year for the Golden Knights (13-10/6-6 NE-10).
Saint Rose completed the sweep of the opener after Southern Connecticut State (21-13/4-7 NE-10) committed two consecutive attack errors with the scored tied 24-24. The Golden Knights had opened up a 17-12 lead, before the Owls scored 10 of the next 15 points to forge a 22-22 tie. Sophomore outside hitter
Rachel Baxter put away a kill to make it 24-23, but a Saint Rose hitting error tied it for the seventh time, 24-24.
Baxter finished with a .333 hitting percentage behind nine kills and only three attack errors at 18 swings. She also added three blocks. Freshman outside hitter
Marilyn Glamack had a match high 10 kills, freshman middle hitter
Chelsea Tyler wound up with seven kills, five blocks and five digs; and junior right side hitter
Jaclyn Griffin added six kills and four bocks. Furthermore, freshman setter
Theresa Staulo handed out a three-set, season-high 33 assists and junior libero
Mary German came up with 10 digs in the back.
Junior outside hitter Jenna Tammel and freshman right side hitter Leah Filonuk combined for 18 kills and 17 digs to pace the Owls.
In the nightcap, the Golden Knights pushed the first and third sets to the 26th and 32nd points respectively to take a 2-1 lead. However, the Panthers (24-9) won the fourth set by rattling off four of the final six points. They then opened up a 5-0 advantage in the finale and never looked back.
Glamack had 12 kills and 16 digs, while Griffin and Baxter added eight kills apiece to pace the Saint Rose charge. German and freshman defensive specialist
Lisa Geonnotti came up with 20 and 17 digs respectively, while Staulo had an outstanding all-around performance behind 34 assists, seven kills, six digs and five blocks.
Junior middle hitter Kelsey Hackett led the Adelphi offense with 14 kills, while junior right side hitter Audrey Goss and freshman middle hitter Patawe Simms contributed 13 and 11 respectively. Sophomore setter Heather Mau recorded 42 assists and 19 digs.
Saint Rose has nearly a week to prepare for league leader Merrimack's visit on Friday. Meanwhile, Southern Connecticut State has a home date with conference foe Pace University and Adelphi hosts East Coast Conference rival C.W. Post on Tuesday. All three matches have 7:00 pm starts.
