ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose men's soccer team outshot an opponent for the third time in its last five matches, but came up on the short end with a 4-0 setback to visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Anselm this afternoon. The Golden Knights (1-9-1/0-7-1 NE-10), who are 0-4-1 during their last five contests, outshot the Hawks (4-6-1/2-3-1 NE-10) by a 13-10 margin, but couldn't convert in a game that featured few clear cut chances.
However, Saint Anselm found the back of the net twice in each period to snap a three-match losing streak. Senior forward Sam Lamptey had two goals and assisted on another, while freshman midfielder Joshua Rocco and sophomore forward Jeff Dell'Orfano accounted for the other two tallies.
Dell'Orfano pocketed his team-leading sixth strike of the year in the 24th minute when he settled a cross from Lamptey, before letting go a shot that found the upper corner on the far side. Lamptey then got one himself with less than a minute to go until halftime. Junior forward Richard Simmonds slipped a diagonal feed through the box that Lamptey collected in stride and deposited home.
In the second stanza, Lamptey beat Saint Rose freshman keeper
Patrik Ohlsson to a loose ball near the top of the penalty area. Lamptey flicked the ball over a sliding Ohlsson into the back of the net. The Hawks wound up the day's scoring in the 88th minute when freshman midfielder Steven Sousa launched a pass from near midfield that sent Rocco in alone on Ohlsson.
As for Saint Rose, the tireless work rate of sophomore midfielder
Liam Barrett prevented Saint Anselm from keeping him off the ball throughout the entire match. Additionally, senior forward
Joe Hunt came close to cutting a 2-0 deficit in half in the 59th minute when he volleyed a high bouncing ball out of the air, off a Barrett corner, that forced Saint Anselm junior keeper John Corridan to make a key save. In the 82nd minute of a 3-0 game, junior forward
Scott Couch got off a threatening strike that sailed just over the crossbar to sum up the Golden Knights' afternoon.
Ohlsson finished with three saves, while Corridan turned aside five shots-on-goal in the Saint Anselm net.
Saint Rose is back on the road for a 3:30 pm conference match Tuesday at Saint Michael's in Colchester, VT. Meanwhile, Saint Anselm is scheduled to host NE-10 rival American International Wednesday at 3:30 pm in Manchester, NH.
