SAINT ROSE COMES UP TWO GOALS SHORT AGAINST #20 LE MOYNE

Sophomore fullback Anthony Eleftherion
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose threw a scare into 20th ranked Le Moyne for the first 78 minutes before the visiting Dolphins struck twice within a six-minute span to hand the Golden Knights a 2-0 setback in Northeast-10 Conference men's soccer action this afternoon. The game marked the regular-season home finale for Saint Rose.

Sophomore forward Angelo Reina recorded his team-leading 10th goal behind his fourth game-winner of the year and sophomore fullback Sean Lawlor added an insurance marker in the 84th minute to pace the Dolphins (12-3-2/9-3-1 NE-10) to their third straight win.

Le Moyne generated a 14-9 shot advantage, although the on-target threats stood at three apiece. Junior keeper Steve White turned aside all three Saint Rose strikes en route to his seventh clean sheet of the season, while Saint Rose (2-12-1/1-10-1 NE-10) freshman Patrik Ohlsson recorded one save on the day.

The Golden Knights battled throughout against a Le Moyne squad that had yielded multiple goals to a mere two opponents all year. Sophomore fullback Anthony Eleftherion had a clean look from 15-yards out in the 34th minute that forced White to come up with a save. In the 41st, senior forward Joe Hunt  ran onto a ball on the right flank and got off a clean shot that sailed just above the crossbar from 25-yards out. Hunt almost struck again in the 65th when he swept the ball off the feet of a Le Moyne defender, gained possession and let go a shot that ricocheted off the crossbar.

Unfortunately, Le Moyne broke through 13 minutes later when senior midfielder Matthew Pecheone settled a bouncing ball on the left flank and slid a pass through the box that Reina gathered and fired into the lower right corner. Lawlor then got off a nifty shot from 15-yards out on the left side that bent outwardly past a defender and just inside the near post.

There is now one more date on the docket for Saint Rose as the Golden Knights will conclude their 2008 campaign on Saturday with a 1:00 pm meeting at league rival New Haven. Meanwhile, Le Moyne will head to Long Island for a key non-conference date at 25th ranked Dowling on Saturday. Kick-off is set for 7:00 pm.
