SAINT ROSE VOLLEYBALL HAS THREE-MATCH WIN STREAK SNAPPED

Junior Mary German
ALBANY – The College of Saint Rose women's volleyball team had its three-match win streak snapped via a 3-2 (14-25, 25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 11-15) setback against visiting UMass Lowell this evening in a Northeast-10 Conference match at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.

Sophomore middle hitter Kelly Ryan hit .257 and led all players with 16 kills for the Golden Knights (11-6/5-3 NE-10). Ryan also chipped in with four blocks. Freshman Marilyn Glamack contributed eight kills and 12 digs, while freshman setter Theresa Staulo passed out 43 assists to go with seven digs and three blocks.

Junior middle hitter Elsa LeGrand and sophomore outside hitter Sarah Coscia paced the River Hawks (8-13/3-5 NE-10) with 14 and 11 kills respectively. UMass Lowell, which snapped a five-match skid with the victory, also received 30 assists from junior setter Nichole Rondeau and a match-high 20 digs from junior libero Allie Eide.

After dropping the first set 25-14, Saint Rose bounced back with 25-20 and 25-18 wins in the second and third set to take a 2-1 edge. In set four, the River Hawks raced out to a 10-2 advantage but the Golden Knights managed to whittle away at the deficit to pull to within one, 17-16, on a kill by junior right side hitter Jaclyn Griffin. However, Saint Rose was unable to gain an advantage the rest of the way as UMass Lowell sophomore middle hitter Kaitlynne Akroyd punctuated the set with a kill that gave the River Hawks a 25-23 triumph.

In the fifth and deciding set, the Golden Knights trailed by one, 12-11, but the River Hawks managed to get a pair of kills and took advantage of an attack error by Saint Rose for the final 15-11 margin.

Saint Rose will return to action tomorrow when the Golden Knights welcome Franklin Pierce. The match is scheduled to get underway at 1:00 pm at Nolan Gymnasium. UMass Lowell continues its westward swing tomorrow when the River Hawks visit Le Moyne for a 12:00 pm league match.
