GOLDEN KNIGHTS UPSET BID FALLS SHORT AT UMASS LOWELL

Senior forward Joe Hunt
LOWELL, MA – An upset bid by The College of Saint Rose came up short as host UMass Lowell (6-2-3/5-1-2 NE-10) scored the game-winner in the 78th minute to upend the Golden Knights (1-11-1/0-9-1 NE-10) 3-2 this afternoon. Saint Rose led 1-0 in the opening 10 minutes and 2-1 at the outset of the second half, but the River Hawks rallied both times to run their win streak to three games.

Senior forward Joe Hunt scored both goals for Saint Rose, while sophomore forward Stephen Potcner  sandwiched two tallies around a strike by senior midfielder Matias Pietropinto to lead the River Hawks.

Hunt opened the scoring by converting a feed from sophomore back Abiola Davids. He struck again just 26 seconds following the second half kickoff when he gathered a failed clearance at the left border of the box, settled and let go a shot that found the inside of the top right corner.

Potcner tied the game 1-1 just 53 seconds after Hunt's tally when headed home a cross off the foot of senior back Joey Esteves. UMass Lowell squared it 2-2 in the 65th minute when junior midfielder Jeffery Danso penetrated down the left flank and found Pietropinto at the top of the box, who tucked his shot inside the right post. Potcner accounted for the game-winner 13 minutes later when he let a go shot that was deflected by a Saint Rose defender.

Freshman keeper Patrik Ohlsson had six saves for the Golden Knights as UMass Lowell held a 19-8 overall shot advantage.

Saint Rose has a week off before hosting conference rival Stonehill next Saturday at 1:00 pm. Meanwhile, UMass Lowell has a 7:00 pm league date at Assumption in Worcester, MA on Wednesday.
