BUFFALO, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose volleyball team edged Lake Erie in a thrilling five-set match this afternoon to open play at the D'Youville Tournament. Saint Rose secured the victory behind a 15-13 win in a fifth frame that featured 12 lead exchanges between the two squads.
A trio of Golden Knights finished with double-digits kills in the win. Sophomore middle blocker
Joanna Forrest recorded 12 kills, while senior outside hitter
Jessica Vargas and
Juliana Venduro landed 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Forrest tallied four kills to help the Golden Knights take the first set 25-19. After the Storm responded with a 25-22 triumph in the second frame to level the action at 1-1, the Golden Knights would go on to claim the third frame 25-18 to re-take the lead.
Trailing 2-1 in the match, Lake Erie would pull away from a 17-17 deadlock in the fourth set to win the set 25-23.Â
Saint Rose closed out the victory by taking a seesaw final set that saw neither team establish an advantage of more than two points until the Golden Knights led 13-11.
Sophomore setter
Alandra Hasbrouck registered 27 assists, while junior libero
Katelyn Atchinson had a match-high 19 digs. Junior middle blocker
Julia Cavalcanti totaled four solo and six assisted blocks to lead the defensive effort.
The Golden Knights continue at the D'Youville Tournament tomorrow. The day starts with a 10:00 am matchup with a host Saints before concluding at 4:00 pm against West Liberty.
