ALBANY, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose baseball team tried to fight back from an early deficit, but ultimately fell to Northeast-10 Conference rival New Haven tonight at Bellizzi Field. The Chargers, who received votes in this week's NCBWA top-25 poll, rallied early and then held on for the 9-7 triumph.
The Golden Knights trailed from the first inning on, as the visitors plated six runs in their first trip to the plate. Senior second basemen
Jared Reed drove a solo homerun out to right, however New Haven sandwiched the Reed blast with single runs in the second and fourth frames to push the margin to 8-1.
Saint Rose began to show some signs up life in the middle innings, beginning with a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to five. Sophomore shortstop
Vince Venditti and senior designated hitter
Louis Gendron each recorded RBI singles as part of the big frame.
With the deficit at 8-4, Gendron and senior first basemen
Jack McDonald drove in runs in the sixth inning to edge the Golden Knights to within two.Â
After the Chargers got a run back in the top of the eighth, Gendron responded with another single to center field that brought around senior center fielder
Ryan McGee, who scored a game-high three runs.
The bottom of the eighth continued see the Golden Knights put the potential tying runs on base with one out, only to see the rally end with back-to-back strikeouts.
The two sides will square up again tomorrow in an afternoon doubleheader beginning at 12:00 pm.
