ALBANY, N.Y.- Sophomore shortstop
Vince Venditti homered in the bottom of the tenth inning to help The College of Saint Rose baseball team earn a 4-1 walk-off victory in game one today against New Haven. Venditti sent a three-run blast over the left field fence to break a 1-1 deadlock in extra innings.
After New Haven scored an unearned run in the top of the third, the Golden Knights drew even at 1-1 on a long RBI double off the bat of Venditti that scored pinch runner
Tyler Romano.
Senior starter
Randall Alejo scattered three hits in 6.0 quality innings for the Golden Knights in the opener. The reliever duo of freshman Matthew Tibera and graduate student
Carson Stewart followed with 2.0 shutout innings each out of the bullpen to provide Saint Rose the chance for the Venditti walk-off in the tenth.
In addition to the 3-for-5 effort at the plate from Venditti, the Golden Knights received a multi-hit effort performance from senior first basemen
Jack McDonald with a run in game one.
Venditti deposited another two-run homerun in the second game of the day, as he cleared the left field fence again in the bottom of the fifth to cut what was a 4-0 New Haven lead down to two.
Following the Venditti long ball, New Haven immediately answered with seven runs in its next trip through the lineup to extend the margin to 11-2 in the top of the sixth.
A three-spot in the bottom of the sixth, followed by a two-run double by senior designated hitter
Louis Gendron in the last half of the seventh brought the Golden Knights to within 11-7 in the final frame, however the Chargers were able to hold on to split the pair of seven-inning contests after Saint Rose threatened with the potential tying run at the plate in its final at-bat.
Senior center fielder
Ryan McGee was on base three times, scored a run, and registered a sacrifice fly, while sophomore catcher
Ryan Deo finished 3-for-4 with an RBI.
Four different Chargers scored multiple runs in the game two win, with graduate third basemen Andrew Cain going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to lead the way for New Haven.
The Golden Knights are slated to return to action on Friday for a home doubleheader against Pace. New Haven next matches up with Alliance in a non-conference meeting at home on Wednesday afternoon.
