NEW HAVEN, Conn.- The College of Saint Rose baseball team took losses in the first two contests in this weekend's four-game series at Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State. Saint Rose was edged 4-3 late in game one before dropping the finale 9-3.
Senior first basemen
Jack McDonald knocked a two-run homerun in the top of the first inning to provide the Golden Knights an early lead in the opener.
After the Owls got solo runs in both the second and seventh innings to tie things at 2-2, Saint Rose pulled ahead once again on a RBI-groundout by senior left fielder
Zephaniah Vaughn in the top of the eighth.Â
The lead would be short lived however, as Southern Connecticut State scored twice in the bottom half the frame to take its first lead of the day.Â
Junior catcher
Michael Nazzaro singled and eventually made his way to third in the ninth inning for the Golden Knights, but sophomore third baseman
James Ward struck out to end the game and strand Nazzaro as the potential-tying run. Nazzaro finished 2-for-4 in game one.
The seven-inning game two saw SCSU jump out to 2-0 advantage early, but after adding another run in the fourth, the Owls plated six runs in the bottom of the fifth to put things away.
Sophomore designated hitter Natham Toms went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore shortstop
Vince Venditti drove in a run as well for Saint Rose in game two.
The Golden Knights will be back in New Haven to wrap the four-game set on Monday, with first pitch set for 12:00 pm.
