ALBANY, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose baseball team scored six runs in both the first and second innings to defeat the Saint Thomas Aquinas Spartans 14-8 in a non-conference clash at Bob Bellizzi Field this afternoon.
The Golden Knights jumped on the Spartans early, getting out to an early 12-0 lead behind offensive explosions in the opening two frames.
It was senior right fielder
Tony Socci who started the two-out first inning rally for Saint Rose with a RBI single that drove home sophomore shortstop
Vince Venditti. A single by senior designated hitter
Louis Gendron and a two-run double by sophomore third baseman
James Ward continue the rally for the Golden Knights.
A two-run single by senior second baseman
Jared Reed would drive in senior left fielder Zephaniah Vaugh and Ward to open up a 5-0 Saint Rose lead. Senior center fielder
Ryan McGee would cap off the six-run first inning with an RBI single to bring home sophomore catcher
Collin Casey.
Socci started the second-inning rally for the Golden Knights as well, leading off the frame with a double to center field. Socci, along with Gendron, would score on the second double the game by Ward, who would finish 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Socci finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.
Junior righty
Stephen Orlando started the game for Saint Rose, shoving three scoreless innings to open the game for Golden Knights. Orlando struck out three while holding the Spartans hitless over the first three innings.
Graduate senior
Chris Palmer took over for Orlando to begin the top of the fourth inning and spun three more scoreless to earn the win. Palmer gave up just one hit and three of his five strikeouts came in the fifth inning when he mowed down the side.
First baseman
Jack McDonald blasted a homerun over the right field fence in the bottom of the fifth to extend the Golden Knights lead to 13-0.
Senior
Pryce Wasula got the final six outs for the Golden Knights, striking out two batters over the last two innings.
The Golden Knights head to Syracuse, NY this weekend for a back-to-back NE10 doubleheaders versus Le Moyne on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch for both days is set for 12:00 pm.
