CAREER DAY FROM RICE PROPELS SAINT ROSE TO NEAR UPSET VERSUS NATIONALLY RANKED ADELPHI

ALBANY, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose men's lacrosse team lost to the #2 nationally ranked Adelphi 20-16 in a Northeast-10 Conference clash Tuesday evening at Sullivan Field.

Saint Rose midfielder Jack Rice had a career day for the Golden Knights, netting five goals and dishing out three assists for a game-high eight points in the contest. For Rice, the goals, assists and points totals all mark career bests for the freshmen.

The Panthers came into the game a perfect 7-0 on the season and 3-0 in conference play, but the Golden Knights gave them all they could handle. The 16 goals scored by Saint Rose was the most the Panthers have given up on the season, and the four-goal margin of victory is also the smallest margin of victory for Adelphi on the year.

Adelphi senior midfield Kyle Stenibach, who led the Panthers with 5 goals, scored the first two goals of the game as Adelphi opened up a 3-0 lead. However, a goal from Golden Knights senior attack Eddie Baker, followed by the first of Rice's five tucks, had Saint Rose trailing just 4-2 after one period.

The Golden Knights would fire off three unanswered goals in the second frame to knot things up at 5-5 midway through the quarter. Back-to-back goals by Baker and the first of freshmen attacker Noah Gibson's hat trick did the damage for Saint Rose on the run. Baker would finish with four goals and two assists while Gibson totaled three goals and two helpers.

Saint Rose sophomore attack Jackson Spikereit fired off a shot from deep for the sixth Golden Knight goal and they would go into halftime trailing 9-6.

A five-goal run from Adelphi between the third and fourth quarters would have Saint Rose facing its largest deficit of the game, but the Golden Knights would not go away quietly, as they scored seven of the game's final 10 goals, including the final four, to fight to the final whistle versus the veteran Panther squad.

Senior attack Cam Smith would tally two goals in the final four minutes for Saint Rose, the first on a feed from senior midfield Gabe Nish. The second, a highlight reel goal on a feed from Rice.

Junior goalie Ryan Gainor turned away a career-high 17 shots in net for the Golden Knights.

The Golden Knights are back at home on Saturday at 12:00 pm as they continue NE10 play versus American International. Adelphi next faces Assumption in a Saturday afternoon matchup on Long Island.
