GOLDEN KNIGHTS EARN A SPLIT IN THE FINAL DAY OF THE GEORGIAN COURT INVITATIONAL

LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The College of Saint Rose earned a split in the final day of action at the Georgian Court Invitational, hosted by Georgian Court University. The Golden Knights began the day with a 3-1 victory over Queens College before falling to Shepherd in the finale.

Saint Rose received 20 kills from junior outside hitter Jessica Vargas in the opening matchup against the Knights. As a team, the Golden Knights landed at least 13 kills in each set while holding Queens (2-6) to a .131 swing percentage.

Trailing 20-19 in the pivotal third set of the 1-1 match, Saint Rose rallied to win seven of the final nine points to claim the set 25-22. The Golden Knights closed the decided fourth frame in a similar fashion, recording a 7-2 run over the last nine points to secure the match victory.

Sophomore middle blocker Julia Cavalcanti finished with 13 kills while junior setter Valeria Jorge tallied a career-best 45 assists in the win, adding to strong weekend performances in which both were recognized as members of the All-Tournament Team.

In the second match of the day, the Golden Knights offense sputtered to a .067 strike rate as a team in a 3-1 setback to Shepherd.

The Golden Knights (4-3) best play came in a 25-21 third set victory in which the Saint Rose offense broke away from a 15-15 deadlock by taking 10 of the last 16 points of the stanza.

Sophomore middle blocker Karleigh Fripp and Cavalcanti topped the Golden Knights attack with seven kills each in the finale. Senior outside hitter Mikaylah Hoy registered 16 kills to help Shepherd (8-0) remain unbeaten this season.

Looking forward, Saint Rose returns home to Nolan Gymnasium to welcome Felician for a 7:00 pm meeting on Tuesday night.
