VARGAS TALLIES 18 KILLS IN NE10 OPENER AGAINST NEW HAVEN


ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose opened Northeast-10 Conference play tonight with a 3-1 defeat to visiting New Haven, with the Chargers earning the victory behind set scores of 25-22, 21-25, 25-20, and 25-20.

Junior outside hitter Jessica Vargas led all players with 18 kills and junior setter Valeria Jorge tallied 43 assists for the Saint Rose (6-8/0-1 NE10) in the setback.

Following an opening set that was claimed by New Haven, the Golden Knights fought back to take the second frame after recording a key 10-3 rally in the middle stages. 

The Chargers attack re-grouped in the third and fourth sets however, landing 27 kills with only seven errors across the final two frames to secure the victory.

Sophomore outside hitter Macy Brown paced New Haven (7-6/1-0 NE10) with 13 kills, while freshman outside hitter Avery Moore and senior outside hitter Emily Barry totaled 12 and 11 kills, respectively.

Looking ahead, both teams stay in the NE10 for 1:00 pm contests on Saturday. The Golden Knights travel to Pleasantville, N.Y. to face Pace University while New Haven is home to welcome Southern New Hampshire.
Notes: The Golden Knights are in the midst of a stretch of nine home contests in 11 matches...Jorge tallied her 1,000th career assist in tonight's match…She ranks third in the league with 8.86 assists per set and was been named to the NE10 weekly honor roll for the period ending Sunday, September 18…Vargas (134 kills) and sophomore middle blockers Julia Cavalcanti (110 kills) and Karleigh Fripp (91 kills) each rank in the top-20 in the conference in kills…Cavalcanti also the tops the NE10 with 27 aces and Fripp owns the league's fourth-best swing percentage with a mark of .370.
