MANCHESTER, N.H. - The College of Saint Rose struck twice in the final 30 minutes, but could not overcome a three goal deficit in today's 4-3 loss at Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Anselm, which improved to 4-0 at home with the win.
The Hawks (6-1-0/3-1-0 NE10) scored twice in each half and converted a penalty kick at the 58:51 mark for what proved to be the game-winner after the Golden Knights struck in the opening eight minutes of the second stanza and then rallied from a 4-1 deficit with goals at the 59:39 and 85:16 junctures.
Junior midfielder
Josh Elliott had a goal and an assist while sophomore backs
Lucas Malmquist and
Victor Boje Henriksen also scored for Saint Rose (4-3-1/1-2-1 NE10), which has dropped back-to-back contests for the first time all year following Saturday's 2-1 setback at then #3 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce.
Senior keeper
Ryan Henning came up with a season-high six saves, while senior Brian Underhill turned aside eight shots-on-target for Saint Anselm.
Overall, the Golden Knights generated a 19-16 shot advantage although the Hawks developed a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Senior forward Jackson Bukunt, graduate student forward Zach Elliott, and senior midfielders Kyle White and Taylor Silverstein accounted for the Hawks' goals.
Saint Anselm, which is off to its best start in 20 years, put itself out front in the opening moments as Bukunt struck in the opening 23 seconds before Zach Elliott drove a shot into the high left corner to make it a 2-0 match at intermission.
Saint Rose cuts its deficit in half when
Josh Elliott finished a drive high and right off a feed from senior midfielder
Andrew Lule with 53:10 expired.
The Hawks responded a mere 87 seconds later as White scored to make it 3-1. Saint Anselm seemingly put the match away after Silverstein delivered on the PK, but the Golden Knights refused to go quietly as Malmquist made it 4-2 by finishing a feed from
Josh Elliott. Henriksen then touched home pass from junior forward
Nico Faretta although that's as close as it got as Saint Rose could only generate one more shot over the final five minutes.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights have a week off before visiting league rival New Haven next Wednesday at 7:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Hawks are back home Saturday to host NE10 rival Assumption at noon.
Notes: The Golden Knights are ranked #9 in the East Region according to this week's United Soccer Coaches poll…Sophomore keeper
