GOLDEN KNIGHTS PLAY TO SCORELESS DRAW VERSUS #16 SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE

ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose played to a scoreless draw this afternoon against visiting nationally ranked Southern Connecticut State in what was the Northeast-10 Conference opener for both squads. In the process, the Golden Knights (3-1-1/0-0-1 NE10) ran their unbeaten stretch to four matches.

Saint Rose generated a 15-7 shot advantage, including a 7-4 differential in threats on target, and developed five corners while yielding two on the way to its third straight shutout.

"We battled and competed to the maximum today. I'm really proud of how we performed. A tie is probably a fair reflection of the game today. We're looking forward to getting back on the pitch Wednesday," said Head Coach Steve Wieczorek.

Saint Rose had its best chance to get on the board with just more than three minutes remaining until intermission when junior midfielder Josh Elliott was tackled hard in the box to present a penalty kick opportunity.

Junior back Nick Koenig drove the PK attempt to the left corner, but Owls (3-0-2/0-0-1 NE10) sophomore keeper Devon Juan dove to his right to deny the attempt. He then bounced back to his feet to deflect away Koenig's ensuing drive off the rebound.

Elliott nearly put the Golden Knights ahead a mere 11 minutes in when he made a run into the area and drove a hard shot that forced Juan to move to his left.

In the second half, senior midfielder Kevin Winglosky drove a shot from about 10-yards out that sailed just over the crossbar.

Meanwhile, sophomore midfielder Umberto Catale provided the biggest threat for the Owls, who are ranked #16 in this week's United Soccer Coaches National Poll. Catale drove a hard shot from in close that forced senior keeper Ryan Henning to come up a key save midway through the first half.

Looking ahead, both teams return to the pitch with home matches Wednesday. The Golden Knights host league rival Le Moyne at 6:00 pm, while the Owls entertain Queens College at 7:00 pm.
Notes: Saint Rose is ranked #7 in the first in-season United Soccer Coaches East Region Poll...Koenig and Henning were named to the NE10 weekly honor roll Monday…Five different players have accounted for the team's seven goals thus far…Saint Rose has not surrendered a goal throughout the last 342:51 of action.
