ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose used some outstanding defense and resiliency to record its fourth consecutive shutout with today's 1-0 win against visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival Le Moyne.
The match was fairly evenly played with the Dolphins (2-2-1/0-1-0 NE10) generating a 10-9 shot advantage, although the threats on-target were even at three each. Saint Rose also manufactured five corners, while yielding four.
"I can't say enough about our defense and how well we have executed in the back. I've never been part of a team that has posted four straight shutouts and to do so against four quality opponents really says something about our group," said Head Coach
Steve Wieczorek.
The Golden Knights (4-1-1/1-0-1 NE10) scored early in the first half and then held off Le Moyne throughout the final 20 minutes as the Dolphins pushed forward desperately seeking the equalizer.
Saint Rose took its 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when junior forward
Hilmar Halldorsson buried a penalty kick inside the lower left post after junior midfielder
Josh Elliott was tripped from behind in the area.
Le Moyne increased pressure as the second half wore on and developed its best chance to level the affair in the 52nd minute when graduate student midfielder Alessandro Otte headed a ball from close range that bounced off the turf towards the left corner. However, sophomore keeper
Tomas Rozman leaped to his right to deflect the attempt for what was the most vital of his three saves throughout the afternoon.
Looking ahead, both sides have 1:00 pm conference road matches Saturday. The Golden Knights meet #3 and defending NE10 champion Franklin Pierce in Rindge, N.H., while the Dolphins face Southern New Hampshire in Manchester.
