SAINT ROSE FIGHTS BACK FROM 1-0 HALFTIME DEFICIT TO DEFEAT CALDWELL

ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose fought back from a 1-0 halftime deficit by scoring three times within a 26-minute span to defeat Caldwell University 3-2 tonight at The Plumeri Sports Complex. In the process, the Golden Knights (1-1) delivered the first win to head coach Steve Wieczorek who took over the program this past summer.

Senior forward Kevin Winglosky and freshman forward Saevar Jonsson accounted for the final two goals, while junior forward Hilmar Halldorsson converted a penalty kick at the 58:02 mark to tie the match 1-1.

"This was a great team performance. I'm so happy we were able to come back. Kevin's goal is as good of a goal you'll see at the college level and to get the game-winner from a freshman really says something. We're now just looking forward to our next game," said Wieczorek.

Saint Rose controlled the play in the early going, but the Cougars (0-2) broke through first when junior midfielder Alex Spencer dribbled into the area and fired a shot inside the left post with 17:09 expired.

Halldorsson converted his penalty kick in the opening 14 minutes of the second half after sophomore back Lucas Malmquist was taken down hard while gaining acreage inside the area.

Winglosky then delivered a beautiful strike less than a minute later when he positioned himself on the right flank to one-time a cross off the foot of junior midfielder Josh Elliott that made it 2-1 Golden Knights. Caldwell immediately responded though as senior forward Andre Vieira lined a shot home from about 15-yards out.

The ensuing 20 minutes were pretty evenly played as the match appeared headed for a deadlock until junior back Nick Koenig sprung Jonsson on the right flank. Jonsson drove a low shot to inside the far left post for the difference maker.

Overall, Saint Rose engineered an 8-4 shots-on-goal advantage although each side generated six corners. Sophomore Tomas Rozman came up with both of his saves in the final 45 minutes, while fellow sophomore Dylan Valencia made five stops for the Cougars.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are back home next Saturday to take on Molloy College at 4:30 pm. Meanwhile, Caldwell heads to Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania Thursday for a 7:30 pm meeting.
