ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose earned a berth to the upcoming Northeast-10 Conference Championship Tournament by splitting today's Senior Day twin-bill versus Adelphi at Bob Bellizzi Field.
Â
The Golden Knights (20-28/12-12 NE10) got some outstanding pitching to take the first game 4-0, before the Panthers struck late to win the nightcap 8-6.
Â
In the opener, sophomore right-hander
Randall Alejo fanned eight over the distance to run his record to 3-3 on the season.
Â
Saint Rose pushed across a run in the second and broke it open with three more in the third. Sophomore right fielder
Josh Myers delivered a two run single to highlight the third after freshman left fielder
James Ward came across on an error in the second.
Â
That proved to be more than enough breathing room for Alejo who faced just four batters above the minimum and allowed only the game's leadoff batter to get into scoring position throughout the 7.0 inning contest.
Â
In the finale, the Golden Knights generated 4-1 and 6-3 leads by the fourth inning before Adelphi got to within a run in the sixth, tied it in the seventh, and pushed across two more in the ninth to win it.
Â
Junior third baseman
Tyler Osborne, junior first baseman
Jack McDonald, and senior second baseman
Remington Almarante recorded two hits apiece, while Osborne and sophomore designated hitter
Nathan Toms drove in a pair of runs for Saint Rose.
Â
Junior first baseman Alec Maag went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and freshman left fielder Johnny Catuosco finished 3-for-5 for Adelphi (28-11-2/17-6-1 NE10).
Â
Looking ahead, the first round-single elimination portion of the NE10 Championship Tournament is set to get underway on Tuesday. The bracket is scheduled to be announced tomorrow night. The Golden Knights will be making their fourth postseason appearance since joining the league in 2001.
Notes: Saint Rose snapped a season-long five game losing streak today…The Golden Knights are 17-11 when they score first and 3-17 when their opponent takes the first lead…They are also 15-3 when leading after six innings, but 2-24 when trailing at that juncture…Alejo has not allowed a run in his last two appearances that span 14.0 innings of work…He has fanned 15 and walked just one throughout that stretch…Alejo also lowered his ERA to 2.45 this afternoon, which puts him third among the NE10 leaders…McDonald has now reached base in 22 consecutive games.
