ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose had its postseason run come to a heartbreaking end with today's 5-4, 11 inning Northeast-10 Conference Championship first-round setback at Adelphi.
Â
"I'm really proud of the guys on our team and the way we battled throughout the season. We came up a little bit short today, but we played together and gave it all we had the entire season right up until the end. I can't thank this group of guys and the guys who played before them enough for the effort and commitment to Saint Rose and our baseball program. Their impact will be felt for many years to come," said Head Coach
Wayne Jones.
Â
The Golden Knights (20-29) put themselves in a winning position all afternoon. They led 2-0 heading to the eighth and after the Panthers tied it 2-2 in the home half, they pushed across two more in the ninth before Adelphi answered again with two more to force extras.
Â
Neither side threatened in the tenth, but Adelphi manufactured the game-winner in the 11th after Saint Rose went down in order in the top half. Junior second baseman Anthony Cipri led off the frame with a base hit up the middle. He advanced to second on a sacrifice, and came around to score one batter later on an RBI single by senior center fielder Cooper Johnson.
Â
The Panthers (29-11-2), who are now 21-4 at home this spring, will face host Assumption in the opening round of the Championship's double elimination portion on Thursday in Worcester, Mass. The Greyhounds chalked up a 2-0 victory at Franklin Pierce this evening to advance.
Â
Junior right-hander
Jared Restmeyer was on point this afternoon. He kept the potent Adelphi offense off balance throughout the first eight innings. Restmeyer scattered five hits and worked around five walks against the conference's top hitting unit that came into today sporting a league best .331 team batting average.
Â
Junior third baseman
Tyler Osborne and junior center fielder
Zephaniah Vaughn finished with two hits apiece to pace the Saint Rose attack.
Â
It was a scoreless affair through four innings, before the Golden Knights broke through in the fifth. Junior first baseman
Jack McDonald belted a double to the left-center field gap with runners at the corners to bring around Osborne and freshman second baseman
Vince Venditti with the game's first two runs.
Â
That is how stood until the bottom of the eighth when Panthers junior shortstop Michael Draskin smacked a two-out, two run base hit to left to knot the game 2-2.
Â
Saint Rose showed its resiliency though by manufacturing a pair of runs in the top of the ninth. McDonald was hit by a pitch and sophomore catcher
Derek Haughey drew a walk. Pinch hitter
Patrick Henning then laid down a sacrifice bunt to put McDonald and Haughey in scoring position. Freshman left fielder
James Ward lifted a fly ball center to score McDonald and Vaughn singled through the left side to bring across Haughey for a 4-2 Golden Knights lead.
Â
However, Adelphi answered in the bottom half. Cipri scored on a wild pitch after drawing a leadoff walk and junior Jose Matos tied it on a pinch-hit, RBI base hit to left.
Â
Cipri finished 3-for-4 to lead the Panthers, while freshman right-hander John Rizzo hurled 3.0 innings of one-hit ball out of the bullpen to go to 8-2 on the year.
Saint Rose in the NE10 Championship: Saint Rose made its fourth NE10 Championship Tournament appearance since joining the league in 2001. The Golden Knights last reached this juncture in 2016 under a similar setting when as the fourth seed they upset host Adelphi 4-0 in a first round encounter. Saint Rose subsequently advanced to the league final where it fell 5-4 to Southern New Hampshire on the campus of Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H.
Notes: The Golden Knights 20 wins this season are the most since the 2016 squad finished 21-20…Saint Rose finished 5-8 in one-run games and 1-2 in extra innings this year…Five of its top six hitters are expected back next season.
Golden Knights Golf Classic: The Golden Knights Golf Classic is set for Friday, June 10 at Pinehaven Country Club. Reunite with friends, teammates, alumni and supporters of the Golden Knights for a round of golf. All proceeds will directly benefit the 350-plus Saint Rose student-athletes. The success of the
Golden Knights Golf Classic, as our primary department fundraising event, is contingent upon the generosity of friends, alumni, and others to participate in this year's event. Your financial support will enhance the intercollegiate experience for our student-athletes and allow our programs to stay on par with our NCAA Division II competitors in the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics.
