ALBANY, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose came up short in a ninth-inning comeback attempt against Southern Connecticut State, with the visiting Owls holding on to secure the 7-6 Northeast-10 Conference victory today at Bob Bellizzi Field.
Graduate center fielder Andrew Eng finished 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI to lead Southern Connecticut State (17-6/4-3 NE10) in a match-up that served as a make-up for the postponed meeting on March 26 between these two squads.
Saint Rose opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when sophomore designated hitter
Nathan Toms touched home following a single up the middle by junior center fielder
Zephaniah Vaughn, one of three hits tallied by Vaughn in the setback.
The Owls scratched across a run in the third to draw even before Eng hit the first of his two long balls in the sixth, a solo shot to left field.
Trailing 2-1, the Golden Knights plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth on run-scoring singles by junior first baseman
Jack McDonald and sophomore catcher
Derek Haughey. A sacrifice fly by junior third baseman
Tyler Osborne scored Vaughn in the next frame to push the Saint Rose advantage to 4-2.
The lead held until the top of the eighth when Eng sent a three-run blast out to right field to put the Owls back ahead. Southern Connecticut State manufactured two more runs in the top half of the ninth to extend the cushion to 7-4.
Sophomore pinch hitter
Jelani Hamer and freshman left fielder
James Ward each knocked in runs to cut the margin to 7-6 in the Golden Knights last turn to the plate. However, the final rally culminated with a pop out by Vaughn with the bases loaded.
