WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The College of Saint Rose split today's doubleheader at Northeast-10 Conference rival New Haven by winning the opener 8-6, before falling 4-1 in the finale.
 
The Golden Knights (18-22/10-8 NE10) rallied from a 6-2, fifth inning deficit to take the opener 8-6. Saint Rose got one back in the sixth and then pushed across four runs in the seventh, before adding another in the ninth.
 
Freshman designated hitter 
Nathan Toms did most of the damage in the seventh by belting a three-run homer over the left field fence that tied it 6-6. Freshman left fielder 
James Ward then crossed home on a wild pitch to afford the Golden Knights a 7-6 lead.
 
Freshman second baseman 
Vince Venditti stroked an RBI single in the ninth to add an insurance run.
 
Saint Rose fell behind 1-0 in the first, but took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a Venditti two-run single.
 
The Chargers (21-17/6-12 NE10) then scored three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to go ahead by four. However, junior center fielder 
Zephaniah Vaughn doubled down the left field line, and sophomore right fielder 
Josh Myers followed with an RBI base hit in the sixth to cut the Saint Rose deficit to 6-3.
 
Junior third baseman 
Tyler Osborne, sophomore catcher 
Derek Haughey, Toms, Vaughn, and Venditti finished with two hits apiece to lead the Golden Knights offense.
 
Junior first baseman Andrew Bianco homered and finished 3-for-5 with three RBI to pace the Chargers offense.
 
In the second game, Saint Rose took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Haughey RBI base hit. However, New Haven tied in the bottom half and went up 3-1 an inning later, before adding another run in the sixth.
 
Senior right-hander Thomas Etto held the Golden Knights hitless over the final 5.0 innings of the 7.0 inning game and wound up fanning six over the distance to improve to 6-2 on the year. Senior catcher Josh Lester finished 3-for-3 to spearhead the New Haven offense.
 
Looking ahead, the two teams are scheduled to resume their series with another noon twin-bill tomorrow at New Haven.
