ALBANY, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose swept an afternoon doubleheader against Northeast-10 Conference rival Pace University today at Cathy Haker Field.
Saint Rose (14-29/10-14 NE10) utilized two big innings to claim the 8-6 win over the Setters (27-16/14-10 NE10) in the opener, followed by the first career shutout by freshman pitcher
Hannah Breen in game two that helped the Golden Knights to a 3-0 victory.
"Our team showed up and played two really gutsy games against a very good Pace team," said Saint Rose Head Coach
Abby Arceneaux. "These girls have battled all season long and their tenacity resulted in some great team wins today."
After Pace staked a 2-0 lead in the second inning of game one, the Golden Knights manufactured a two-out rally in the bottom of the third.
Sophomore first basemen
Madison Chandler delivered a two-run single that scored freshman left fielder and freshman third basemen
Emma Schaub, and senior shortstop
Savanna Liverio-Tyler added an RBI single that brought home freshman catcher
Ellen Fuda as part of the four-run frame for the Golden Knights.
A two-run home run by freshman second basemen Brianna Shea for Pace evened the score at 4-4 in the fourth, however, the Golden Knights lineup plated four runs with two outs again in the bottom of the inning to reclaim the lead at 8-4.
Fuda provided the big hit for the Golden Knights in the fourth, driving in freshman left fielder
Mattison Muller and Schaub with a single to center field.
Pace cut the deficit to 8-6 in the fifth with a two-run homer by freshman right fielder Alexa Borino, though that would be the closest the Setters could manage as Saint Rose freshman pitcher
Isabella Milazzo registered three of her seven strikeouts over the final two innings to secure the win.
In game two, the Golden Knights received RBI by Muller and Chandler to build a 2-0 advantage in the third inning. Muller doubled to deep left field to plate sophomore center fielder
Ciana Phillips from first base, followed by a single up the middle by Chandler that knocked in Muller.
The Golden Knights pushed across their third run of the game when sophomore second basemen
Alexandra Deeter came home on a wild pitch in the fourth.
Breen allowed seven hits and struck out four across 7.0 innings to earn the shutout victory in the circle for Saint Rose.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights are back at Cathy Haker Field for Senior Day beginning tomorrow at 12:00 pm against Adelphi. Pace heads to Syracuse for a doubleheader with Le Moyne.
