ALBANY, N.Y. – This one will go down in the record books. The College of Saint Rose chalked up the biggest win in its brief three-year history with today's 16-15 victory against visiting No. 16 and defending Northeast-10 Conference Champion Bentley.
Â
The Golden Knights (7-2/3-2 NE10), who are coming off a 1-11 campaign a year ago and were picked 13th among 14 schools in this season's NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll, built a 12-8 lead in the final 25 seconds of the third quarter and held off a Falcons squad that got to within a goal on five occasions throughout the game's final 13 minutes.
Â
Saint Rose however won the ensuing draw control four times and scored on three of them, before running out the clock after Bentley struck to make it a 16-15 affair with a mere 25 seconds remaining.
Â
"This team continues to grow each and every day. They are showing balance and discipline on both sides of the ball. We are playing as a unit, which is so much fun to watch. They continue to impress me with their hard work and determination. I leave each game prouder of them than the last one," said Head Coach
Sarah Martin.
Â
Overall, the Golden Knights won 19 of 33 draw controls while Bentley generated a 23-19 ground ball differential. Each squad engineered 23 shots-on-goal.
Â
Sophomore attack
Kaitlyn Jolly led the Saint Rose offense with a career-high five goals, while sophomore midfielder
Daria Bock finished with two strikes, three assists, three ground balls, and nine draw controls. Freshman attack
Lauren Pendergast accounted for three goals, while freshman attack
Katy McPeak and sophomore midfielder
Deanna Ciliento each scored two goals.
Â
Sophomore midfielder
Julia Lasher had a goal and pair of assists, while fellow sophomore midfielder
Payton O'Hara twice found the back of the cage. Sophomore goalie
Dorothy Gaffney recorded eight saves.
Â
At the other end, sophomore attack Maeve Johnson struck four times and senior midfielder Glenna Gies scored three goals to pace Bentley (4-3/3-2 NE10).
Â
Saint Rose came out clicking. The Golden Knights got out to a 4-1 start in the opening eight minutes, but the Falcons countered to take 5-4 and 6-5 leads late in the second quarter. O'Hara then buried a Lasher feed in a man-up situation to tie the game 6-6 with 1:56 remaining until the break, and Jolly scored unassisted with 21 seconds to go to afford the Golden Knights a 7-6 halftime advantage.
Â
Saint Rose never trailed again thanks to some clutch draw controls and subsequent timely finishes.
Â
Looking ahead, both squads have 7:00 pm conference dates Tuesday. The Golden Knights travel to North Easton, Mass. to face #18 Stonehill while the Falcons host Southern New Hampshire.
