PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose took both ends of today's doubleheader to earn a split in the weekend series with host Northeast-10 Conference rival Pace University.
The Golden Knights (13-19/6-6 NE10) received some outstanding pitching to take the opener 2-0 and then bounced back from a 4-1 deficit to win the finale 6-4.
"We played good, solid baseball today against a good Pace team. We pitched really well, got some timely hits, and our defense made the plays we needed to give us two hard fought wins," said Head Coach
Wayne Jones.
Junior right-hander
Cameron Flynn tossed 5.0 innings of three-hit ball to pick up the win and sophomore left-hander
Carson Stewart hurled 2.0 hitless innings with four strikeouts to lead Saint Rose in the first game. Meanwhile, seven different players had one hit apiece.
The Golden Knights struck first in the third inning when freshman second baseman
Vince Venditti drove a leadoff base hit up the middle and came across two batters later on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior third baseman
Tyler Osborne. Freshman left fielder
James Ward scored on an infield groundout after reaching on an error in the fourth.
In the finale, Saint Rose scored four times in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead before adding an insurance run in the seventh.
Sophomore right fielder
Josh Myers grounded out with the bases loaded to bring in one run. Venditti, sophomore shortstop
Jelani Hamer, and Osborne then smacked consecutive RBI base hits to put the Golden Knights up by a run. Myers made it 6-4 in the in the seventh with a single up the middle that scored Ward.
Venditti wound up 3-for-4 while Ward and freshman designated hitter
Nathan Toms both finished 2-for-5. Ward also scored a pair of runs, while Myers had two RBI.
On the hill, junior right-hander
Jared Restmeyer improved to 5-2 on the year after surrendering four runs in 5.0 innings of work. Graduate student right-hander
Greg Allard tossed 3.0 innings of one-hit, shutout ball to pick up the save.
Graduate student right fielder Luke Jacobi went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a walk to lead Pace (17-13/8-7 NE10).
Looking ahead, Saint Rose returns home Wednesday to host Franklin Pierce for a noon doubleheader in a make-up from April 10. Pace is off until next weekend when it hosts Southern Connecticut State for a four-game, NE10 series.
Notes: The Golden Knights are 2-6 in one-run games, but 4-0 in two-run games this spring…They have recorded at least 10 hits in five of their last 11 contests…Saint Rose went 8-for-24 with runners on base in today's second game after going just 4-for-28 throughout the previous three games in the series…Ward has hit in six consecutive contests at a .409 (9-for-22) clip.
