SAINT ROSE SWEEPS LE MOYNE TO OPEN UP WEEKEND SERIES

ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose used some outstanding defense and pitching, along with some luck, to open its weekend Northeast-10 Conference series against Le Moyne with a pair of one-run wins. The Golden Knights came back from a 4-2 deficit to take the opener 5-4 and scratched out a pair of runs in the first that stood up for a 2-1 victory in the finale.

"We really battled today and pulled out two hard-fought victories. We pitched great, played great defense, and had some timely hitting. We did whatever it took to come out on top," said Head Coach Wayne Jones.

In today's first game, Saint Rose (15-19/8-6 NE10) used some of that timely hitting to bounce back by scoring twice in the sixth and pushing the winning run around in the ninth courtesy of a Le Moyne error.

Freshman left fielder James Ward belted an RBI triple and junior center fielder Zephaniah Vaughn followed with a sacrifice fly to deadlock the game 4-4 in the sixth, after the Dolphins (19-16/8-5 NE10) had scored four times an inning earlier.

Saint Rose came out swinging to score a run in each of the first two innings. Junior third baseman Tyler Osborne belted a lead-off single in the first and scored on an RBI double to the right-center field gap by sophomore designated hitter Nathan Toms. Freshman second baseman Vince Venditti  then singled to right and stole second with one down. He advanced to third, before scoring on the same play after the catcher's throw bounced into left field.

Le Moyne threatened in the eighth with a pair of runners in scoring position and two down, but Ward made a diving catch in left off a liner by graduate student right fielder Michael Smith to save a pair of runs.

Venditti finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Junior right-hander Cameron Flynn surrendered only one hit in 3.0 innings of relief, while sophomore lefty Carson Stewart picked up the victory after setting the Dolphins down in order in the top of the ninth.

Junior center fielder Zach Brush belted a three-run homer to right to highlight the four-run Le Moyne fifth. Meanwhile, sophomore lefty Max Parker scattered six hits and allowed three earned runs over 8.0 innings of a no-decision outing.

For the finale, graduate student right-hander Anthony Amoroso allowed just the one run and fanned five over the distance to pick up his third win of the spring. He worked out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the sixth by inducing back-to-back strikeouts.

Sophomore catcher Derek Haughey  drove an RBI base hit to left and junior first baseman Jack McDonald scored on an error to account for the two Golden Knights runs in the first.

Brush finished 4-for-4 to lead the Dolphins.

Looking ahead, these two teams are scheduled to conclude their weekend series with another noon twin-bill tomorrow at Bob Bellizzi Field.
Notes: The Golden Knights are now 4-6 in one-run games this spring…McDonald has reached base in 12 straight and owns a team-leading 14 multi-hit games…Venditti has hit at a .379 (22-for-58) clip throughout his last 17 games to raise his average to .299 (26-for-87) on the year…Amoroso has allowed only three runs throughout his last two starts that comprise 13.0 innings of work…Flynn has not allowed an earned run in his last four appearances that span 10.0 innings.
Golden Knights Golf Classic: The Golden Knights Golf Classic is set for Friday, June 10 at Pinehaven Country Club. Reunite with friends, teammates, alumni and supporters of the Golden Knights for a round of golf. All proceeds will directly benefit the 350-plus Saint Rose student-athletes. The success of the Golden Knights Golf Classic, as our primary department fundraising event, is contingent upon the generosity of friends, alumni, and others to participate in this year's event. Your financial support will enhance the intercollegiate experience for our student-athletes and allow our programs to stay on par with our NCAA Division II competitors in the ever-changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics.
