ALBANY, N.Y. – The College of Saint Rose claimed a pair of Northeast-10 Conference victories against American International this afternoon at Cathy Haker Field, earning wins of 5-1 and 8-4 over the visiting Yellow Jackets.
Freshman right-hander
Isabella Milazzo continued her stellar week in the circle for Saint Rose with a 7.0 inning, nine strikeout victory in the opener.
In the second game of the afternoon, senior shortstop
Savanna Liverio-Tyler went 3-for-4 with four RBI, while freshman right hander
Hannah Breen tallied a career-best 12 strikeouts to lead the Golden Knights (11-22/7-9 NE10) to the series sweep.
"We are playing some good softball right now and I believe our best softball is still ahead of us," said Head Coach Abby Arcenaux. "To come back and get two sweeps in a row after losing so many close games just shows the fight our group has. We are hungry for a trip to the postseason tournament and are taking it one pitch at a time."
In game one, the Golden Knights opened the scoreless contest in the fourth inning with a double to right field by Milazzo that brought home sophomore second basemen
Alexandra Deeter and freshman designated player
Abby Behrikis. Milazzo would come around to score two batters later on an RBI ground out by freshman catcher
Ellen Fuda.
After the Yellow Jackets (3-23/1-11 NE10) gained a run back in the top half of the fifth, Saint Rose would score twice more in the bottom of the frame on run-scoring singles by sophomore pinch hitter
Colette Cohen and junior left fielder
Morgan Tyrrell to build the advantage to the winning margin of 5-1.
Game two saw Liverio-Tyler put Saint Rose ahead in the first inning with her first double of the finale, a rocket to the right center fielder gap that scored sophomore first baseman
Madison Chandler.
Following a run by American International in the third, Liverio-Tyler fueled a Saint Rose rally in the bottom of the frame when she laced her second double of the game to bring around Tyrrell and Chandler. Milazzo and freshman left fielder
Mattison Muller each knocked in runs as well for the Golden Knights in the four-run inning.
In the fourth inning, Liverio-Tyler doubled for the third time in the contest, sending a shot off the left field wall that scored Tyrrell and Chandler again. Following a pair runs by the Yellow Jackets in top of the fifth, the Golden Knights pushed the margin to 8-3 in the next half inning on an RBI triple by Tyrrell that plated sophomore center fielder
Ciana Phillips from first base.
Tyrrell and Chandler combined to score five runs and Milazzo finished 2-for-3 at the plate in game two.
The Golden Knights return to action on Monday at home against Assumption after Saturday's twin-bill between the two squads was postponed due to weather. The re-scheduled doubleheader begins at 1:30 pm at Cathy Haker Field. American International next faces Adelphi at home in Springfield, Mass. on Monday.
