CARY, N.C. – The College of Saint Rose suffered a back-and-forth 13-12 setback to West Virginia State this afternoon on the final day of its appearance at the D2 Challenge that was held at the U.S.A. Baseball National Training Center.
Â
The game featured 30 combined hits and four lead changes before the Yellow Jackets (3-3) scored twice in the seventh to go up 12-11. They then pushed across what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch in the eighth.
Â
The Golden Knights (4-6), who left 14 runners on base, did not go quietly though. Junior centerfielder
Zephaniah Vaughn belted a leadoff home run over the left field fence to make it 13-12 in the ninth. Saint Rose subsequently put the go ahead run on with none out, but West Virginia State was able to induce a foul out and a double play to the end the ballgame that took 3:11 to complete.
Â
Eight of the nine Saint Rose starters had at least one hit including Vaughn and freshman second baseman
Vince Venditti who pounded out three apiece. Vaughn had a double in addition to his home run, while Venditti doubled as well. Sophomore right fielder
Steve Sanders also homered, while junior first baseman
Jack McDonald finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of walks.
Â
Junior right fielder Trey Junkins went 4-for-5 with four runs scored, while freshman right-hander Quincy Thornton allowed a run on two hits in 2.2 innings of relief to pick up the win for West Virginia State.
Â
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights head south to visit Augusta on Tuesday at noon. The Yellow Jackets travel to Bluefield State on Wednesday for a 2:00 pm meeting.
