SAINT ROSE DROPS HITTING DUEL TO WEST VIRGINIA STATE

CARY, N.C. – The College of Saint Rose suffered a back-and-forth 13-12 setback to West Virginia State this afternoon on the final day of its appearance at the D2 Challenge that was held at the U.S.A. Baseball National Training Center.

The game featured 30 combined hits and four lead changes before the Yellow Jackets (3-3) scored twice in the seventh to go up 12-11. They then pushed across what proved to be the winning run on a wild pitch in the eighth.

The Golden Knights (4-6), who left 14 runners on base, did not go quietly though. Junior centerfielder Zephaniah Vaughn belted a leadoff home run over the left field fence to make it 13-12 in the ninth. Saint Rose subsequently put the go ahead run on with none out, but West Virginia State was able to induce a foul out and a double play to the end the ballgame that took 3:11 to complete.

Eight of the nine Saint Rose starters had at least one hit including Vaughn and freshman second baseman Vince Venditti who pounded out three apiece. Vaughn had a double in addition to his home run, while Venditti doubled as well. Sophomore right fielder Steve Sanders also homered, while junior first baseman Jack McDonald finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a pair of walks.

Junior right fielder Trey Junkins went 4-for-5 with four runs scored, while freshman right-hander Quincy Thornton allowed a run on two hits in 2.2 innings of relief to pick up the win for West Virginia State.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights head south to visit Augusta on Tuesday at noon. The Yellow Jackets travel to Bluefield State on Wednesday for a 2:00 pm meeting.
