CARY, N.C. – The College of Saint Rose pounded out 14 hits and limited Saint Thomas Aquinas to only three to chalk up today's 10-2 victory in its 2022 debut at the Division II Challenge on the grounds of the U.S.A. Baseball National Training Complex.
Â
The Golden Knights (2-5) broke open a 4-2 ballgame by pushing across three runs in the both the seventh and eighth innings.
"We played very well as a team today. We got great pitching, played solid defense, and some of the adjustments we made offensively over the last couple of weeks really showed. It was a nice way to start off our spring break trip," said Head Coach
Wayne Jones.
Junior right-hander
Jared Restmeyer allowed just an earned run on one hit with eight strikeouts throughout 6.2 innings of work to pick up the win. Fellow junior right-hander
Cameron Flynn surrendered a hit and whiffed four in 2.0 innings out of the bullpen.
Â
They got plenty of support. Junior first baseman
Jack McDonald went 3-for-5 and drove in three runs behind a double and a two-run homer in the eighth to propel the Saint Rose attack, which featured eight players with at least one hit. Junior center fielder
Zephaniah Vaughn and sophomore shortstop
Jared Reed both finished 3-for-4 with a double.
Â
Also, sophomore catcher
Derek Haughey followed a McDonald RBI double with a running scoring triple to afford Saint Rose a 2-0 lead in the third.
Â
Vaughn and sophomore third baseman
James Dolan belted back-to-back two-baggers in the fourth to make it 4-0 Golden Knights. Sophomore right fielder
Steve Sanders doubled in a run to highlight the seventh and McDonald's homer accounted for most of the damage in the eighth.
Â
For the Spartans, senior right-hander Aaron Dona allowed three earned runs on eight hits and fanned seven.
Â
Looking ahead, Saint Rose continues its stay at the D2 Challenge tomorrow with a pair of games. The Golden Knights face STAC again at 11:00 am and meet West Chester at 2:30 pm.
