WALTHAM, Mass.- The College of Saint Rose received strong pitching performances from the freshmen duo of Isabella Milazzo and Hannah Breen to earn a split today at Northeast-10 Conference rival Bentley. The Falcons won the opener, 3-2, before Saint Rose claimed a 5-2 victory in the finale.
Heartbreak beset the Golden Knights in game one, as graduate third basemen Kaileen Cain led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run to right field to provide the Falcons a 3-2 walk-off win.
Saint Rose had fought back from an early 2-0 deficit, tying the game in the third when sophomore first baseman Madison Chandler plated freshman third basemen Emma Schaub and sophomore center fielder Ciana Phillips with a triple to deep left field.Â
Milazzo was stellar in the setback for the Golden Knights, surrendering a mere three hits while striking out nine across 6.0 innings.Â
Game two saw Saint Rose (7-12/3-1 NE10) stake a 3-0 lead in the top of the third when Chandler tripled in two runs and senior third baseman Savanna Liverio-Tyler knocked an RBI single.
The Golden Knights extended the advantage to 5-0 after Schaub deposited a two-run home run to left in the fifth.Â
Bentley (11-7/1-1 NE10) pushed across runs in the sixth and seventh in a late comeback attempt. However, Breen was able to close out the complete game victory.Â
Breen tallied eight strikeouts and limited the Falcons to just two runs.
Looking ahead, Saint Rose travels to Caldwell for a pair of non-conference match-ups in Caldwell, N.J. on Thursday. Bentley stays in the NE10 for a Saturday doubleheader at Adelphi on Long Island.
Notes: Chandler has hit safely in 12 straight games at a .390 (16-for-41) clip with 10 RBI…She leads the team with an .829 OPS, in addition to a team-high six multi-hit performances.
