ALBANY, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose scored in the bottom of the tenth inning to open Northeast-10 Conference play with a 7-6 victory over a tough Southern Connecticut State team.
Freshman center fielder
Vince Venditti delivered the game-winning knock for the Golden Knights in the extra frame, sending a bases loaded, hard grounder up the middle to bring home sophomore catcher
Derek Haughey.
Prior to the walk-off hit, Venditti helped Saint Rose come back from a 6-5 deficit in the bottom of the ninth when he followed a triple by junior third baseman
Tyler Osborne with an RBI single to left field.
"Our team showed a lot of resiliency today and we had a bunch of different guys come through in big spots at the plate and on the mound," said Head Coach
Wayne Jones. "I'm really proud of how hard we played and the way we battled throughout to get the victory."
The back-and-forth contest was one-sided in the early innings, as the Golden Knights sprinted out to a 4-0 advantage in the first, sparked by a two-run single by sophomore designated hitter
Josh Myers.
After Saint Rose added one more in the third, Southern Connecticut State began to chip away in the middle stages, scoring two runs in the fifth and another in the seventh to keep the action close.
The Owls (13-4/0-1 NE10) took their first lead of the afternoon after plating three in the top of the eighth, setting up the late-inning heroics for Saint Rose.
Sophomore right-hander
Tyrell Irvis earned the win for the Golden Knights (8-11/1-0 NE10) after pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the top of the tenth.
The patient Saint Rose lineup drew eighth walks in addition to the team's 15 hits. Haughey and Myers led the Golden Knights with three hits apiece; while Osborne, Venditti, and senior right fielder
Samuel Brioso each finished with two hits as well.
Fresman right fielder Bill Sullivan led the Owls with three hits.
The second game of the afternoon doubleheader was postponed due to rain. With the inclement weather lingering in the Capital Region, Saint Rose and Southern Connecticut State will continue the weekend series with a pair of seven-inning games tomorrow in New Haven.
Both squads have NE10 Southwest Division series ahead of them next weekend. The Golden Knights travel to Springfield to visit American International, while the Owls host Le Moyne.
