WINTER HAVEN, Fla.- The College of Saint Rose wrapped its Florida trip with a pair of thrilling, comeback victories in the final day of competition at THE Spring Games .
The Golden Knights began the afternoon by claiming a 7-6 victory over Notre Dame College (Ohio) in match-up that was undecided until the seventh inning.
Sophomore outfielder
Ciana Phillips opened the scoring with a solo home run to right field in the bottom of the first to give the Golden Knights an early 1-0 advantage.
Â
The lead would be short-lived, as the Falcons responded with a two-out rally in the top of the second that scored five runs. The Notre Dame lineup drew four consecutive walks, all with the bases loaded, to account for the damage in the big inning.
Â
After Saint Rose got a run back when freshman infielder
Alexandra Deeter walked with the bases full in the fourth frame, the Golden Knights offense broke through for three more runs in the fifth, with RBIs by sophomore
Madison Chandler and senior infielder
Savanna Liverio-Tyler that helped Saint Rose draw even at 5-5.
Â
The seventh frame saw Notre Dame re-take the lead in the top of the inning when senior infielder Lexi Rehm beat a throw home following an infield grounder.
Â
Trailing 6-5, Saint Rose started the bottom of the seventh with a single by freshman designated player
Alysa Houghtaling and a walk to freshman catcher
Ellen Fuda that set the Golden Knights up with runners on first and second and no outs.
Â
Following a fly out by Deeter, junior outfielder
Morgan Tyrrell slapped a grounder that resulted in the Bobcats committing two errors in the infield. The miscues allowed pinch runner
Sophia Schaub and Fuda to both come around and score, giving Saint Rose the 7-6 walk-off victory.
Freshman pitcher
Margaret Kelley was superb in her 5.1 innings of relief to allow the Golden Knights to fight back.
Saint Rose claimed another come-from-behind win in the second game of the afternoon, erasing a 5-0 first inning deficit to knock off Clarion 8-6 in eight innings.
Sophomore infielder
Colette Cohen singled in a run and freshman outfielder
Mattison Muller tallied three RBIs in the third and fourth innings to help Saint Rose cut the Clarion lead to 5-4.
After the Golden Eagles added one back in the fourth to extend the advantage to 6-4, Saint Rose generated two runs in the top of sixth, with a productive ground out by Phillips bringing home Tyrrell to tie the game.
The Golden Knights benefited from two errors by Clarion in the top half of the eighth to push across the deciding two runs in the 8-6 victory.
Freshman pitcher
Hannah Breen went the distance to earn the win for Saint Rose. Breen bounced back strong after the big first inning by Clarion, surrendering only one run over the last 7.0 innings.
The Golden Knights competed in a third game of the day, falling to Upper Iowa 6-2 under the lights. Liverio-Tyler deposited a two-run homer to give Saint Rose a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Peacocks claimed the final six runs of the game to earn the victory.
Saint Rose next returns to action with a doubleheader at Saint Thomas Aquinas in Sparkill, N.Y. on Sunday, March 20.
