WILSON, N.C. – The College of Saint Rose split the first two games of the final leg of its spring break trip today at Fleming Stadium in North Carolina. The Golden Knights (5-8) upended Alderson Broaddus 8-2 in the opener, but fell 6-0 to California University (PA) later in the afternoon.
Â
In the first game, Saint Rose (5-8) scored in each of the first four innings including three in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. The Golden Knights then added one in the seventh and another in the eighth.
Â
Junior right-hander
Jared Restmeyer was in control throughout. He did not allow an earned run and surrendered just two hits while fanning nine over 8.0 innings of work to go to 2-1 on the year. Graduate student right-hander
Greg Allard recorded three strikeouts in the ninth.
Â
Restmeyer got help from a balanced offense. Junior first baseman
Jack McDonald, sophomore designated hitter
Nathan Toms, and freshman center fielder
Jake Ranney had two hits apiece to lead the Saint Rose attack.
Â
The Golden Knights pulled away in the fourth when Ranney scored on a groundout by junior third baseman
Tyler Osborne. Sophomore shortstop
Jared Reed then came across on a McDonald base hit and scored himself two batters later on an error.
Â
In the finale, the Vulcans (8-3) broke open a 1-0 game with a run in the sixth, one more in the seventh, and three in the eighth to extend their win streak to three games.
Â
Saint Rose had its best chance to get on the board in the second when it stranded three runners.
Â
Osborne went 2-for-5 to lead the Golden Knights offense.
Â
Meanwhile, freshman first baseman Payton Conte finished 2-for-4 with a double and freshman right-hander Roman Gill tossed 6.0 innings of shutout ball to pick the victory for California (PA).
Â
Looking ahead, Saint Rose and Alderson Broaddus (0-7) are scheduled to meet again tomorrow at Fleming Stadium. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
