SAINT ROSE HANGS CLOSE LATE WITH PACE UNIVERSITY IN 70-62 SETBACK


ALBANY, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose was defeated by a tough Pace University team this afternoon, with the Northeast-10 Conference rival Setters pulling away late to take a 70-62 victory at Nolan Gym.

Saint Rose (3-13/2-10 NE10) was able to keep the action close with Pace, hanging tight late into the second half against a team that received votes in this week's WBCA national rankings and holds the NE10 Southwest Division best record. 

After the Setters led 29-21 at halftime, the Golden Knights sparked a 13-2 run to start a third quarter in which Saint Rose outscored the visitors 20-11 in the frame to take a 41-40 advantage into the fourth.

A back-and-forth opening three minutes of the final quarter saw the teams exchange the lead five times before the Setters tried to pull away. With Pace ahead 59-53, the Golden Knights scored six of the next eight points to bring the deficit to within a basket at 61-59 with 1:34 left. However, the last 90 seconds would belong to the Setters, who closed the game on a 9-3 rally to secure the victory. 

Fifth-year forward Nina Fedullo topped Saint Rose with 19 points and nine rebounds. The junior duo of forward Shamim Wambere and guard Becca Townes contributed a respective 15 and 10 points off the bench for the Golden Knights. 

Pace (17-4/11-3 NE10) received a game-high 33 points from graduate forward and league leading scorer Lauren Schetter. Senior guard Lauren Hackett and graduate student guard Naya Rivera added 10 points apiece.

Moving forward, both teams continue conference play with 5:30 pm road match-ups on Tuesday night. The Golden Knights head to West Haven, Conn. to take on New Haven, while Pace travels to Southern Connecticut State.
Notes: The young Saint Rose roster features eight freshmen, four sophomores, three juniors, and one fifth-year…Fedullo averages 10.3 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game, with the latter mark ranking fifth in the NE10…Junior Becca Townes scores 9.7 points and pulls down 4.3 boards per game...She also ranks third and tied for 10th in the league respectively with averages of 2.2 steals and 2.8 assists per game…As a team, the Golden Knights are second in the conference with 9.1 swipes on a nightly basis.
