ALBANY, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose fell to Southern Connecticut State tonight, with the visiting Owls earning the 55-46 Northeast-10 Conference victory in Nolan Gymnasium.
The Owls used a 15-2 rally in the second quarter to open a double-digit lead early. After facing a 16-point deficit at the halftime break, the Golden Knights responded to outscore Southern Connecticut State 17-10 in the third frame to keep the action close.
Saint Rose was able to cut the lead to seven at 39-32 in the opening minutes of the fourth, but the Owls continually stifled any comeback Golden Knight attempts to keep a comfortable margin to the final whistle.
Both teams struggled throughout the night to find a shooting stroke, with Southern Connecticut State finishing with a 33.9 percent shooting average (19-of-56) and the Golden Knights converting 17-of-56 from the floor (30.4 percent).
Junior
Becca Townes paced Saint Rose (4-16/3-12 NE10) with a "double-double" effort of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Fifth-year
Nina Fedullo and sophomore guard
Isabel Sanchez added eight points each, with Fedullo grabbing nine boards as well.
On the defensive end, Townes and Sanchez tallied three steals apiece. The Golden Knights registered 12 swipes as a team, marking the seventh occasion this season in which Saint Rose has generated 10 or more steals in a game.
Southern Connecticut (11-12/8-9 NE10) received a game-high 22 points and 15 rebounds from graduate forward Jessica Fressle. Fressle respectively ranks fifth and second in the conference in scoring (17.0 points per game) and rebounding (11.0 rebounds per game). She is one of only three players in the NE10 to average a "double-double" on a nightly basis.
