ALBANY, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose and Saint Anselm stayed locked in a tight Northeast-10 Conference battle tonight, with sophomore forward Kaileigh Hunt netting the game-winning free throw with three seconds left to provide Saint Rose a 58-57 victory.
Sophomore guard Catherine Finnerty topped the Golden Knights with a 16-point effort in the comeback win. Freshman forward Aniya McDonald-Perry finished in double-figures as well with 11 points to help Saint Rose claim its third victory in four NE10 contests.
Finnerty hit a deep three-pointer in the closing seconds of the third quarter to bring Saint Rose to within three heading into the final frame after the Hawks had taken a 29-24 lead into halftime.
Saint Rose would keep the margin to within one score throughout the majority of the fourth, with a three-point play by McDonald-Perry leveling the score at 58-58 with 0:52 seconds left. McDonald-Perry created a steal coming out of a Hawks inbounds near half court and driving the distance to complete the layup plus contact
The Golden Knights owned the final shot of regulation after forcing Saint Anselm into a shot clock violation with nine ticks remaining, leading Hunt earning a two-shot foul with 3.1 seconds left on the clock
Hunt would make the first free throw, but a miss on the second attempt was rebounded by Saint Anselm with 1.8 left. After the Hawks called timeout to advance the ball up in the half court, Saint Rose would clamp down on defense to force a contested shot by junior guard Gabby Turco that missed long.
Turco hit on 5-of-6 from three to lead all players with 27 points. Senior forward Liv Robles logged 12 points for the Hawks in the defeat.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights head to Rochester for a non-conference matchup at Roberts Wesleyan at 2:00 pm on Saturday. Saint Anselm travels to Le Moyne for a 5:30 pm contest on Friday night.
