ALBANY, N.Y.- Sophomore guard Joseph Merrill hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to give Dominican University of New York an 87-86 win over The College of Saint Rose tonight in Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. The game-winning shot by Merrill completed an 18-point second half comeback for the Chargers, who registered their second straight buzzer-beating win in the Saint Rose Tip-Off Tournament after having defeated Le Moyne with a layup at the horn on Saturday night.
Efficient shooting in the early stages of the second half allowed the Golden Knights to establish an 80-62 advantage with 5:11 remaining in the game. However, a barrage of three-pointers and increased full-court pressure allowed Dominican to fight its way back, with Merrill's final three capping a 7-for-8 stretch from long range over the final five minutes for the Chargers.
Sophomore forward Shane O'Dell tallied 22 points and 10 rebounds, marking a second consecutive double-double to start the 2022-23 regular season.
Sophomore guards Keegan Zoller and Matt Constant tallied 17 and 14 points, respectively, for the Saint Rose. Constant added five assists as well.
Redshirt senior guard Wahaad Johnson lead all players with 28 points, including 5-for-7 from three. Merrill hit five of his eight attempts from deep to finish with 18 for Dominican.
Looking ahead, the Golden Knights will look to regroup on Wednesday night against Georgian Court. Tip-off is set 7:00 pm in Nolan Gym.
