SAINT ROSE STRIKES EARLY TO UPEND ST. THOMAS AQUINAS

ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose scored in the opening two minutes and added another midway through the second half to upend host St. Thomas Aquinas 2-1 today. The Spartans scored with 73:06 remaining to erase the Golden Knights' bid for their sixth shutout of the season.

Regardless, Saint Rose (6-3-2) extended its unbeaten streak to three matches and held an opponent to one goal or fewer for the sixth time in 2022.

"It was a good hard-fought college soccer game. Both teams had chances and competed well over the 90 minutes. In the end, a touch of quality in the box from Josh (Elliott) after an excellent pass from Ty (Mulcahy) was the difference," said Head Coach Steve Wieczorek.

The Golden Knights overcame being outshot 13-5 as sophomore keeper Tomas Rozman made four his five saves throughout the second half while the Spartans (4-4-3) pressed forward in search of the equalizer.

Saint Rose put itself ahead when senior back Nick Koenig lined a free kick off the crossbar and behind the end line to make it 1-0 with 2:01 gone by.

It remained that way through intermission, before junior midfielder Josh Elliott converted a feed from freshman midfielder Tylan Mulcahy at the 65:42 mark to afford the Golden Knights some breathing room.

St. Thomas Aquinas finally struck seven minutes later when graduate student forward Anthony Bolivar Sanchez drove home a shot off a restart. The Spartans then developed two more shots and a pair of corner kicks the rest of the way, but the Saint Rose defense held tight to preserve the victory.

Looking ahead, both sides return to action Saturday at noon with road league matches. The Golden Knights head to Worcester, Mass. to face Assumption University, while the Spartans travel to Dobbs Ferry to meet Mercy College.
Notes: Saint Rose reentered the United Soccer Coaches East Region Weekly Poll at #10 today…The Golden Knights are now 2-2-1 on the road…Their two setbacks away from the Capital Region came with a 2-1 loss at #2 nationally ranked and defending league champion Franklin Pierce, and a 4-3 defeat at Saint Anselm…Junior forward Hilmar Halldorsson is third among the NE10 leaders with seven goals...He was named to the NE10 weekly honor roll yesterday…Nine different players have scored at least once…The team's five shutouts this autumn are one shy of the program record six that was set in 2019 and 1990.
