SAINT ROSE RECORDS ITS FIFTH SHUTOUT OF THE SEASON BEHIND AN IMPRESSIVE 3-0 WIN VERSUS AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL

ALBANY, N.Y. - The College of Saint Rose recorded its fifth shutout of the season in dominating fashion with today's 3-0 win against visiting Northeast-10 Conference rival American International.

The Golden Knights (5-3-2/2-2-2 NE10) controlled the ball for 60.0 percent of the match, manufactured a 14-5 shot advantage, and a 5-1 corner kick differential throughout a picturesque late autumn afternoon at the Plumeri Sports Complex.

"I can't say enough about how well we played today. It's was simply an outstanding all-around effort. We were sound defensively, possessed the ball, finished our chances, and got contributions from a lot of different people. I am so proud of this group," said Head Coach Wieczorek.

It was a balanced effort with four players figuring in the scoring coupled with a stout defensive effort that limited the Yellow Jackets (1-4-5/0-2-3 NE10) to a mere one shot-on-goal. Meanwhile, junior forward Hilmar Halldorsson scored his team leading sixth and seven goals of the season to lead the offense.

The match was played at a relative modest pace with the Golden Knights probing the American International defense, while consistently gaining acreage inside the offensive third.

Sophomore back Lucas Malmquist eventually struck first. Malmquist jumped on a loose ball near the goal line after the American International goalkeeper bobbled the ball after trying to corral a corner kick from the left flag with 37:00 elapsed.

It stood 1-0 at intermission, but Halldorsson scored an insurance marker just past the one-minute mark of the second stanza. Junior midfielder Josh Elliott lined a cross from near the right end line that Halldorsson headed into the near corner.

Halldorsson came through in similar fashion 23 minutes later as senior midfielder Harry Soederlind delivered a cross from the right side that the former touched in to account for the final margin.

Looking ahead, the Golden Knights have a non-league meeting at St. Thomas Aquinas on Tuesday. Kickoff is set for 2:30 pm. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets host defending league champion and #2 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce on Saturday for a rematch of last season's NE10 title match. Game time is 6:00 pm.
Notes: Saint Rose is now 4-1-1 at home…Halldorsson is third among the league leaders with his seven goals...Nine different players have scored at least one goal…The team's five shutouts this year are one shy of the program record six that was set in 2019 and 1990…Elliott was named to the NE10 weekly honor roll Monday.
