ALBANY, N.Y.- The College of Saint Rose was defeated 77-63 against Northeast-10 Conference rival Saint Anselm tonight in Nolan Gymnasium.
Junior guard
Becca Townes recorded her first "double-double" of the season in the setback for Saint Rose (3-9/2-6 NE10), finishing with team-highs of 18 points and 10 rebounds. Townes added four assists and three steals to round out the strong all-around performance. Sophomore forward
Naeva Rene was efficient from the field offensively as well, finishing with 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting.
Saint Anselm (10-7/6-4 NE10) took a 34-28 halftime lead after an opening 20 minutes in which the visitors made 13 of 26 attempts from the field (50.0 percent). The Golden Knights received a spark off the bench from freshman guard
Charli Goverski, who contributed seven points to go along with Townes" nine points in the opening half.
Saint Rose rallied in the early stages of the third quarter, netting the first five points out of the break to reduce the Hawk advantage to 34-33. However, Saint Anselm responded with an 11-2 rally to build a double-digit advantage that was held throughout the remainder of the final two quarters.
Senior Peyton Steinman led all players with 29 points and sophomore Gabby Turco added 27 points for Saint Anselm. The pair combined to account for 19 of the 27 field goals scored by the Hawks. Steinman entered tonight with the second-highest scoring average (20.1 ppg) and the seventh-best rebounding pace (7.5 per game) in the conference, while Turco was named the NE10 Rookie of the Week on Monday.Â
The Golden Knights head to Worcester, Mass on Thursday to face Assumption in the first half of an NE10 doubleheader. Tip-off is set for 5:30 pm in the make-up from January 8. Meanwhile, Saint Anselm visits NE10 foe Southern Connecticut State on Saturday at 1:30 pm.
Notes: The young Saint Rose roster features eight freshmen, four sophomores, three juniors, and one fifth-year…Fedullo averages team-highs of 10.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game, with the latter marking the third-best rate in the NE10…Townes scores 9.5 points and pulls down 4.2 boards per game...Townes also ranks first and seventh in the league respectively with averages of 2.5 steals and 3.3 assists each game…As a team, the Golden Knights are second in the conference with 9.4 swipes on a nightly basis.
